Columbus is an aesthetically cinematic experience. A story with a masterful approach in a subtle, calm like its making us for a moment to be meditating. Profoundly not in a complete way because its audience have to complete its piece by exploring, and looking further like solving the riddle that words can’t express it, but emotion can.

This is his directorial debut, Kogonada creates a wonderful, alive and true art. It resonates its story through a divine cinematography, seeing every modern architecture in Columbus that is not just stand as it just as a functional. But how this thing has a soul for one who can see and knowing it.

This film brings about family sacrifices toward dream, love, even when you are in the moment, where we not understand why or we refuse to acknowledge it. It’s a story that feels personal but universally related. It’s a critique of critique that testing its audience to see, understand, and appreciate it.

Some of my interpretation comes from its profound narrative and no doubt, the characters has become a tour guide of life in this film. That interpretation is not enough to represent everything that appear in film. Seeing the character moving one place to another, looking their life, looking the character sharing story one to another and done. It’s not that, but it invites you to explore, to make you actively sense and realize that life is not a tutorial and it’s already start from its early existence.

John Cho has a consistency performance. It’s great to see him in this film. Also when it interact to another character by Haley Lu Richardson that brings the character alive as a guider. Every exposure of their emotion is detail. Seeing them traveling from one place to another, interact and trying to understand one another even tho they really don’t understand or handle well of their each problem.

From beginning to the end, with the total shot, it assure you that you are an observer to the film. With the color grading that feels natural and the shot like a painting. The approach is precise and it clearly that the aspect of the film is inspired from Tokyo Story. With subtle tone creates a contemplating experience as we traveled along to the object of the story that beautifully immerse.

The film makes me more believe in cinema, where it really can transcend a vision that amazing to feel it. Kogonada gave me something that I will never forget. Through this friendship melancholy, I found no flaw and if it was there, there’s always reason behind it.

To be true, since I watch this for the first time (now already three times, probably gonna more) it make me speechless. Sometimes there’s a moment where you can’t use words, or probably just make it a key.

It’s not for everyone, of course. It’s sounds boring, artsy, there’s nothing interesting. It’s up to you, this is just my love letter to the film. It’s simple, just about a human story in a true art. I really thankful to Kogonoda to create this such a beautiful cinematic experience, it’s calming, and your film will stuck in my mind always and ever be.

untuk review dalam bahasa indonesia >>> KLIK DISINI!

Lately I've been looking for films that may be missed from radar, and I found this, and blew my mind. Sylvio has the simplicity of telling the story of self-discovery in a unique way, fresh, and pretty absurd. It’s underrated that this film deliver its story with quirky, comical and so indie but no doubt, affectionate.

With Kickstarter, about Sylvio, a gorilla who stuck in working life as a debt collector and always wants to express himself through puppet shows that highlight the moment of silence, though he being mute all the time. Then, accidently famous on TV, and having an event 'What's the Ape gonna break?' something bothered his feeling, on his now achievements that affect his life.

From here, Sylvio lead into his quiet and cold life. But slowly, it transitions into a funny warm moment by using comical quirky humor and little absurd. It’s interesting to know that this story leads to something completely unknown and just flowing like a water. The formula is already commonplace, but in this film, the formula is not wasted with the concept and a goal that this movie wants to achieve. Reaching for the self-questioning moment, "Is it really you?" which each of us has ever felt in that situation.

It’s inventive, and not just echoing about self-discovery, but about dreams, self-expression, and a little touch about humanism and entertainment. As if, it proves that this film has a depth on the material. Moreover, surreal moments are also used. No doubt too, the character Sylvio has a very precise depth.

Forget the minor problem that exist, this story honestly wrapped in unique, fresh. It delivers the story slowly from emptiness, then the absurdity that become enjoyable and fun. But that sense will be broken when it goes to the final round, the third-act where all transitioned to emotional and touching. Utilizing the last moment in closing the story with a slick and full of spirit in life.

Different experience and underrated. Well, some point seems like a simplistic decision, but I thought it’s kind of a reasonable. It's worth watching and definitely going into my list of underrated movies of 2017 soon. Please do not expect nothing on this, because the movie itself does not expect anything from you except you have a pure intention to explore this story not just enjoying what it has. So, "Are you in?"

I found this, and blew my mind.

Hingga akhirnya, acara What’s The Ape, Gonna Break menggaungkan namanya, tapi sesuatu yang mengganjal yang Sylvio rasakan.

It’s not just about self-discovery bila approach yang digunakan demikian, banyak hal yang lain dikupas, mengungkit soal humanis dan tayangan hiburan.

It’s worth watch and definitely going into my list of underrated films of 2017 soon. Please don’t expect nothing on this, karena filmnya sendiri tak mengharapkan ekspetasi apa-apa dari penontonnya kecuali bagi yang benar-benar melibatkan jiwanya untuk benar-benar menyelami kisah satu ini. So, “Are you in?”

INDONESIAN REVIEW

I mean how can you hold your tears for that.

All this works because of this sweet, Brooklynn bersama cast anak kecil lainnya. I bet my life for Brooklynn manis.

“truly remarkable by its poignant honesty of a community and surround with joyful warm”

When another film is busy to explore the romance, war history, fantasy, superhero while this one guided you into the poignant reality that you have to see and feel every minute. When I say poignant reality, doesn’t mean it’s gonna be melodramatic, directed by Sean Baker and he gives honesty to it in warm, joyful, intimate, summer adventure on a community lives in a shadow from perspective of kids and adult.

Basically just adventure on a bitter sweet story, Mooney, little sweet girl living behind the gorgeous big city where Disneyland stand, adventure to anywhere she can with her friends and having a troubled mother that loving her much in her mother’s way. The story is simple, because it’s reality but you have to put your sense so it can transcend its emotion.

Sean Baker did it again on this one, it’s warm as summer as the kids smiling, joyful humor, and very sympathy. Those things works very well because of its honesty. I feel the soul of this film alive because of its honesty and we unaware of facts that the story and character is so intimate through the everyday life of the community, the problems, kids perspective and so the adult until the conflict of the characters bring us into the place where it ends with tears, I mean how can you hold your tears. That ending is so incredible. How poignant in a right execution and makes it real with its detail of life.

The depiction of kids that so playful, adventurous, free to anywhere else they can go, finding happiness even just the ice cream is the perfect menu in the world for them. All this works because of this sweet, Brooklynn with another little cast. Bria Vinaite showing her range in first role, playing a mother that totally broke, rebellious but having much care and love for her kid, and how Vinaite create such a solid bond to children and it’s beautiful. Then the motel manager that full of respect and fatherness, kindness, played by William Dafoe—it’s kinda rare to me seeing him in that kind of role. If there’s best children actress/actor on Oscar, I bet my life for Brooklynn.

The gorgeous and epic cinematography captured on how big this world, how big the shadow behind ‘the building’, hiding the reality that needs to be question and think. How the life of that kids needs to be safe and nice, living in ‘that’ reality that shouldn’t be thought of, and just live in happiness where the world just for them and nobody can steal the smile. I know it’s not just about a children but also the community behind. I really loved this work. The Florida Project, is not a film but a truth reflection that grab your head to see what’s going on and think and realize about it.

INDONESIAN REVIEW

I don’t care of the theme, selagi pegangan prinsip kuat, takkan pasti terpengaruh apapun itu bentuknya.

Fak, lagi nulis kembali baper.

Everything is about understanding, acceptance, and embrace.

“Solid romance and impactful that can stay long in your heart for long time”

For a film like this, it’s difficult to say or put any much words about this than showing my expression on how I really love this film. This film has an extraordinary experience and impactful in a long time. It’s been 4 days, and I never forget that, but my heart, damn, still hurt, help me!

Summer in Italy, Elio met and introduced to Oliver for the first time. Elio think that he is pain by his arrival, everyone likes him, but Elio doesn’t, but somehow he grew to like him. This is his first love that always in his heart.

Fuck, my heart! I’m late to the party, I guess but so many LGBT films with using First Love Story as the fundamental of its story then it goes to lightning the meaning or what it would be. It’s such a great film that make me speechless and to be clear, this gave me a romance experience more and more than the straight romance instead. Actually the main thing is not just about first love story, but also about embrace and empowerment of love, even in this case.

I really like that everything feels solid and right at the place. Watching it feels like the story flowing like normally, probably laughing and trying to swim to their story, until it goes to the ending, something that I never believe to be happen when your heart is so weak but what you have to accept is so big. How the story not just telling but involved the audience to understand the character, everything that includes non-verbal matter, and it flows with the great music by Sufjan Stevens that quickly stand inside your heart.

Honestly, Timothee has a great performance so as his line on the script that really capture on teenage itself, how a 17 year old boy living in a liberal family that created by his parent. Also Armie Hammer does a great job in it. How the chemistry is so strong that you felt the entire moment.

When you see it, even it’s slow-burn and until end, the moment that you just been through will stay for long time. Not to mention, that the special thing is the role parent in it, so rarely to see a parent, especially in cinema, seeing a parent that can accept everything and understanding the condition of their kid. When you hear the speech from Elio’s Father that played by Michael Stuhlbarg very well.

Everything is about understanding, acceptance, and embrace.

p.s. prepare your heart for this film, man.

INDONESIAN REVIEW

Well, yes! I agree that this is so fuckin’ insane.

It’s unusual in storytelling dan film ini crazy-super-double-insane ride.

He’s not a god because of this, he’s still him.

"brilliant on how humanize something on its point of view that remarkable to be reflection"

WTF! One word that is often made for this movie with various kinds of reactions and opinions from various people who have enjoyed it. It really separates the audience in their respective interpretations. Well, yes! I agree that this is so fuckin 'insane.

Honestly I'm confused to be explain you about the synopsis that really describes the actual content, but rather telling that, so this is about a couple who live in peace, destroyed by the arrival of strangers.

Many films this year come with unique experiences, this time mother! comes with ambitious move in material and essence which can be said quite heavy and possibly misunderstood. I can say, this movie has a brilliant writing and the film directed by Aronofsky as a whole as it doesn’t have a plot because everything is metaphorically accompanied by symbolism. With such marketing like that, which evokes a horror impression compared to what viewers will see to give a tremendous reaction. CINEMASCORE gives F grade, and many critics and even other reviewers who are most likely to be unprepared and incapable of receiving something that feels not logic.

This movie is arguably unclear in the pace and even the story that feels like hopping, yes, I admit it. But for me there are some reasons why Aronofsky makes such a thing. It's unusual in storytelling and it's like a crazy-super-double-insane ride. Then the differences of every event and action that feels contrast, sometimes fast-paced sometimes slow-paced.

He's not a god because of this, he's still him. As some of people say and deeply agree that this film has a strong connection with a biblical story. The film is more about highlighting the views of a mother (I do not want to spoil) from the beginning until now. It is so clear that Aronofsky wants his audience to know and contemplate. It's basically like humanizing something to be understood by people who are sometimes poorly tainted. Her (mother) point of view of her house (metaphorical sentence) is really a nightmare because of us. Then also criticize the unsatisfied human nature and other interpretations.

But on the other hand, though everything feels brilliant, the story is sometimes lacking in first-act for first-time watch although eventually until credits I'm speechless and think about it all day long. This is a general discussion that we should look forward to. Also, because this film has a story like an open interpretation, and seeing like that, it possibly getting misunderstood.

Then I want to give Jennifer Lawrence an appreciation, her performances are good though it's rather trying but not in her natural sense and it’s weird to see her so soft in this film. And in the interview with THR she acknowledged that the character she brought this time was really heavy and beyond her capability, plus pray for her diapraghm. In addition, the casts look so great especially Michelle Pfeifer.

I think Aronofsky is very bold and must ready to accept any reaction. This is the dish that makes me wonder at what he wants to say. Shorten the story that feels like centuries because it is so many that managed to slap me without any red.

Finally, not everybody can enjoy and have the same thought, with the overwhelming reaction and the variety of interpretations but one is always the same, making Aronofsky feel successful in making this film even Martin Scorsese giving full support to him. But very unfortunate, when he explains the meaning, the methaporical in it (which I still haven’t read) from this movie. It should be left to the point where the intentions of the movie were reaching a successful. Many great films were in this process that ultimately succeeds at the last point and still does not reveal the essence of it. But the decision has taken place, as long as we understand it, make this movie as a reflection for us as a human being.

P.S. If you watch this film, watch until end even the credits by listening to the song.

"another great and so mexican from pixar which is a MUST-SEE"

Pixar put believes in Lee Unkrich and his team to directing this film and turns out extraordinary. How come? The director that also brought you to Toy Story 3, and that's a hope for those who haven't seen COCO. This film was amazing and emotional, so mexican and the value and the complexity is great.

This film tells you about Miguel, living in a family that always tell to every generation about his great great grandfather and don't ever the music exists anymore in the family, but Miguel has the gift and it's music. Run out from the family and fight for it, he accidently playing a guitar from a dead legendary. By that, he unaware of its existence in another world and trying to escape for it.

Jeez, honestly this film won many heart by the heartfelt, warming, caring and so many great things in it. By the thoughtful-narration that so family-friendly, you gonna bring into Miguel's adventure. Not to mention the experience they gave to me is so colourful, rich and warm. How it build the story and the character and everything feels solid. Every moment you will see is rich in value, rich in culture and in the end you have to face the emotional moment, like you really feel and hope. Another triumph by Pixar. Honestly, the music, damn, it's so great, prepare for hearing it by Anthony Gonzalez who dubbed the main character.

Music, color, and exciting is spot-on. It's like emotion-game, starts from exciting moment, and become more interesting and landed with emotional feeling then go with happy, warming and graceful feeling. When the music on, let your instinct move when you hear it. Then, COCO succeed to give something that matter about family, loss, death, and memory. How it succeed to make me feel and think about family is the important ones than anything. And also feel how someone that we love, hoping for them to remember us.

Bring your family to feel the joyful story and it's a must- see.
