TIMECRIMES (2007) REVIEW

INDONESIAN REVIEW

TIMECRIMES begitu simpel tanpa mengelaborasi panjang teori dengan langsung jump to the action meski predictable jangan terkecoh, film ini akan bermain absurd dengan fun trip menegangkan dan menggelitik.

Jika PRIMER terlalu pintar untukmu mungkin tak sanggup bertahan pada perbincangan jenius, TIMECRIMES mengemas kisah time-travel dalam sajian ringan, dan sesederhana mungkin. Begitupun, tidak menutup kemungkinan betapa briliannya Nacho Vigalondo, sang sutradara yang mampu mengemas film menjadi bak pengalaman konsekuensi yang fun.


TIMECRIMES sendiri bisa dibilang film indie spanyol. Hector disini jadi karakter utama. Pulang kerja bawa barang pesanan istri di rumah, hidup sabar meski tekanan kecil kerap mencoba meruntuhkannya, mulai dari istrinya yang tidak mendengarnya, dan tidurnya yang tidak tenang. Hector kerap mengintip lewat teropongnya melihat sesuatu yang manatahu dapat yang segar-segar, which he got one, but weird. Dari sini, cerita semakin menarik rasa penasaran yang membawa kita ke sebuah asal mula.

Seorang perempuan berdiri dengan kepala menunduk, hadir di hutan dengan perlahan membuka bajunya. Ketika istri mengganggu tontonan di depan teropongnya, perempuan tersebut hilang. Hector mencari ke dalam hutan dan terlihat perempuan itu sudah terbaring & suddenly Hector ditusuk oleh seseorang dengan wajah diperban. Pastinya Hector lari, menuju sebuah bangunan terdekat, bertemu dengan, katakan saja, ilmuwan dan menyuruhnya untuk sembunyi di sebuah bak dan ditutup. Ketika keluar, Hector tanpa sengaja telah terlibat dalam paradoks time-travel yang membuatnya kembali ke beberapa jam yang lalu.


Sampai disitu. It isn't a spoiler, at all, okay! Masih aman kok. TIMECRIMES berjalan dengan on-point dan realistis tanpa harus menjelaskan ini itu, cara kerja time-travelnya karena TIMECRIMES yakin, audiens sudah lebih tahu. TIMECRIMES tidak mentok dengan permainan misteri tanpa bikin pecah kepala namun memuaskan pada level sama. Di pertengahan awal, cerita terasa menegangkan, juga misterius dan tone yang rada mirip horror slasher, apalagi ketika berjalan mengikuti arah lampu sudah dibikin deg-degan abis, namun setelah pertengahan plot terasa off atau melemah meski terselamatkan, suspens tetap berjalan sampai berakhir dengan dark humor yang bikin geleng-geleng kepala. Disini karakter Hector seperti memainkan pion. Langkah yang dia ambil meskipun sangat predictable, sampai pertengahan cerita banting setir. Film ini membawa semua hal yang simplistik, sedikit surreal menjadi super fun yang ringan. 



Nacho Vigalondo adalah sutradara berpotensial, filmographynya cukup unik namun namanya overlooked meski Colossal cukup menaikkan namanya. TIMECRIMES jelas, sebuah time-travel story, bermain simplistik tanpa ribet ini itu dan jump to the action yang sungguh memuaskan. Enjoy the trip.

ENGLISH REVIEW

TIMECRIMES is undemanding, simplistic time-travel story that could balance everything in a bizzare way that you never stop thrills to what it has and a fun trip to join to.

If PRIMER is too clever for you, maybe you can’t handle on what they’re saying though I think it’s an incredible film, there’s TIMECRIMES, little bit adopted on what PRIMER has, also from THE TWILIGHT ZONE. This film is undemanding, simple and that’s how it is. With brilliantly storyteller, Nacho Vigalondo creates this ingineous world into consequences of experience in a fun way.


TIMECRIMES can be said an indie Spanish film. Hector is the main character here. Going home by bringing the stuff for his wife and they living in a forest. So to speak, his life is often attacked with tension even how little it is but he handle it with patient; when his wife doesn’t heard him, and even he can’t sleep and feel bothered on something. Also he sometimes peeking through his binocular whether he could find something pleasure to look at, he got one, and weird. Then the story become more mysterious.

There’s a woman stood with her head down, exist in the forest slowly opening her shirt. When Hector’s wife interrupted the spectacle show in front of his binoculars, that woman disappeared. Hector looked forward into the forest and saw that the woman was lying & suddenly Hector was stabbed by someone with a bandaged face. Certainly Hector ran, headed to a nearby building, met with, let’s say, scientist and told him to hide in a tub and shut down. When he’s out, Hector accidentally was involved in the time-travel paradox that made him back to a few hours ago.


Stop right there. It is not a spoiler, at all, okay! Still safe. TIMECRIMES gives the on-point and is realistic plot without having to explain this or that, how the time-travel works because TIMECRIMES completely confident, that the audience knows much better. TIMECRIMES isn’t stuck by playing the mystery without blowing your mind but results as satisfying at the same level. On the first half, the story feels tense, mysterious and feels like a horror slasher, especially on one scene, when Hector runs to the light paths it completely make me nerve-wracking, but going to the half minutes it feels off or kinda weak although it helped on the next act, suspense still flows through every minutes ‘til it ends with dark humor that blown me away. The Hector's character is like playing a pawn. Every steps he took were very predictable, if you think so, it’s wrong, just prepare. This film really brings all the simplistic things, a little drop of surreal into super fun that is ingenious, and precisely enough.



Nacho Vigalondo is a potential director, his filmography quite good though it seems overlooked, Colossal had brought his name up more. TIMECRIMES clearly, a consequences of time-travel, an experience through it, playing simplistic that jump to the action that resulting best for its idea that he brought. See it and enjoy the trip!

THE CLOVERFIELD PARADOX a.k.a. GOD's PARTICLE (2018)

Fall into a disappointment with its bigger responsible as a connector but somehow it’s worth to see by its matter.

Marketing tak bisa disalahkan, sebenarnya great job buat mereka apalagi untuk tipe film begini. Tak bisa disalahkan juga diriku yang tak bisa enjoy film ini dengan kekacauannya bahkan masih enakan yang sebelumnya yang lebih mencekam, menegangkan dan memuaskan. Banyak orang yang berantisipasi dan terkejut saat filmnya keluar setelah superbowl. Ya, gua punya niat besar untuk nonton langsung film ini dan tetap mengambil pencegahan dengan menurunkan ekspetasi. Dan hal itu terjadi. WHAT. THE. FUCK!


Jujur, film ini tak hanya datang mengejutkan tapi juga selesai dalam keadaan yang sama dengan tambahan gelengan kepala saat aku menyaksikan film ini. Jujur, film ini tak bisa disalahkan akan kekurangannya tetapi disisi lain, film ini tetap harus ditonton. Why? Gua elaborate dulu penilaianku soal film ini.

First thing first, film ini mengambil set di luar angkasa dimana mereka menghidupkan particle accelerator untuk menyelamatkan krisis energi yang sedang terjadi di bumi. Tak tahu juga tahun berapa-an, tapi yang jelas situasi di bumi sering gelap-gelapan, hadeh. Orang-orang yang ada di luar angkasa ini, bukannya berhasil meruntuhkan krisis energi malah berhadapan pada masalah yang di luar akal manusia, di mulai ketika mereka menyadari bahwa bumi tiba-tiba saja hilang.

Jujur, film ini memiliki beban besar terhadap konektivitas film lainnya, mulai dari Cloverfield (2008), 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016), dan juga yang akan datang Overlord (2018) di bioskop nanti. Hanya saja, membawa materi untuk menjawab beberapa pertanyaan di film-film sebelumnya, hanya sekedar begitu-begitu saja, biasa. I can say film ini seperti film kausalitas dari kondisi yang telah terjadi. Hanya saja, banyak kegagalan di dalamnya yang membuat film ini jatuh ambruk dalam kekecewaan.

Kegagalan film ini ialah konstruksi atau membangun tensi ketegangan. Di first-act ketika bermunculan hal-hal aneh yang bikin kening mengernyit cukup menarik tetapi bagaimana eksekusi di second-act bahkan third-act nya kian melemah. Film ini tidak begitu mencekam seperti pendahulunya, atau setidaknya memberikan experience yang menarik lewat misteri udah cukup, tak perlu memberikan sensai menegangkan bila akhirnya begini. Tak hanya itu, dialognya bahkan tidak berhasil menyelamatkan film ini dari kegagalan tersebut. Ketika dialognya demikian, beruntunlah pada pengembangan karakter yang juga melemah, bahkan ketika keinginan director untuk menyisipkan drama di third-act, terlambat sudah akibat beberapa aspek yang kian rendah. Dan tinggallah hanya memberikan jawaban-jawaban tanpa ada kemasan menarik di dalamnya, seakan film ini pelengkap dalam kemasan buruk.

Kalau yang tadi kegagalan aspek-aspek di dalamnya, yang ini malah sia-sia, dan beberapa plot-hole. Kemudian di bagian score yang rasanya tidak sesuai bahkan tidak bisa membantu memberikan rasa ketegangan yang ended-up nanggung. Kemudian di bagian cast yang terasa wasted disini, seperti Gugu Mbatha-Raw yang memerankan tokoh Hamilton di film itu. Akting dan performanya sudah bagus, dan lainnya sebenarnya juga lumayan untuk film ini, hanya saja terhambat karena dialognya.

Buang hal buruk tadi, sekarang bagian kesukaanku di film ini. Hal yang paling kusuka hanyalah bagian awal dan akhir. Bagian akhir seperti menebar minyak pemuas dan menutup dengan pertanyaan yang memutar otak dalam menyusun kejadian demi kejadian di Cloverfield Universe.

Film ini masih interesting di sisi lain, dan worth to see, atau ngelihat spoiler dari orang mengenai ceritanya kalau mau menghemat 1 jam 42 menit. Semua keputusan terserah kalian, bukan maksudku untuk membuat kalian agar tidak menonton film ini, ini semua hanya pendapat dan pemikiranku mengenai film ini. Film itu subjektif, ada yang suka, ada yang tidak, semua tergantung selera dan pandangan anda. Yang jelas, to me, film ini kacau.

Fall into a disappointment with its bigger responsible as a connector but somehow it’s worth to see by its matter.

I can’t blame the marketing, they did a great job for a type of film like this. I can’t blame myself for not enjoying much on this one and prefer the previous one which more, more thrilling and satisfying. So much people anticipated this and surprised when it comes right after the superbowl. Yes, I have a bigger intention and take a precaution by decreasing my expectation. Then, it happens. WHAT. THE. FUCK!


Honestly, this film is not just surprising as it comes to the world but also done in a surprising way with my head shaking a little. This film somehow it is worth to see but if you just wanna take a spoiler from your friend, then that’s yours, haha.

First thing first, this film taking a set from outer space where they have a mission to save the energy crisis by turning on the particle accelerator. I don’t know which year they were but to be clear that earth is in dark. People in a spaceship is not succeed but facing another problem, begin with realizing that the earth is gone. Just gone.

To be honest, this film has bigger load for the connectivity of other film in one film universe, starts from Cloverfield (2008), 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016), and also soon Overlord (2018) in your near cinemas. It’s just, carrying this story to answer few questions from previous films, and just that, it’s not like making its experience become better or at least good. It’s a big disappointment for this one.

So many failure in a messy way. First one, is building the tension, building the thrill, gripping or at least create a fascinating way by taking its mystery in a great packaging. Turns out no, so much potential in this film that just wasted. Then, the dialog that cannot save this film from its failure. When the dialog has a failure, then it goes to the character development that also fail. Even when the film wants to create a drama moment in the third-act before it ended with seconds of satisfying moment, it feels empty even the cast is already putting much effort. Everything left with just answering and knowing the fact and it’s over. It’s a bad wrapped.

Failure in a few aspects, then it’s about the plot, score and cast. Yes, plot-hole is everywhere but not entire, yes, I know if you put attention into the news and other things, but I think some of it still a plot-hole that doesn’t make any sense. Then, the score that it’s weak. You know, score can also build the tension for a bit, take an example like, Life (2016). Next, is the cast. I think this department is pretty wasted. Gugu Mbatha-Raw has a good performance and put a good effort in it, it’s just the story and the constructions of it cannot embrace it.

Let alone that negative points, then going into moments that I really liked. What I really liked is just the beginning and ending. The ending is predictable but it’s still sparkling and satisfying, seeing that thing, roaring and closed by questions that giving duty to your brain, thinking and arranging events in Cloverfield Universe.

Somehow this film is kind of pretty interesting, but I won’t see this again, anymore and have a big regret. If you don’t want to waste your 1 hour 42 minutes just for this crap, it’s all yours. It’s not my decision to hold you up and not watching this one, I am really not, I just put my thoughts about this film and I think this film is not satisfying me. It’s all yours, it’s up to you, your taste and your point of view. Obviously for me, this film is a total messy.

"brillian dengan memanusiakan sesuatu dengan storytelling yang tak biasa"

WTF! Satu kata yang sering dilontarkan buat film ini dengan berbagai macam reaksi dan pendapat dari berbagai orang yang telah menikmatinya. Sungguh memisahkan penonton dalam interpretasinya masing-masing. Well, yes! I agree that this is so fuckin’ insane.

Jujur aku bingung mau jelasin soal sinopsis yang betul-betul mendeskripsikan isi sebenarnya, but kurang lebih menceritakan tentang pasangan yang hidup tenang dan damai, dirusak oleh kedatangan orang asing.

Tahun ini banyak film yang memberikan pengalaman yang semakin unik, kali ini mother! datang dengan ambisius membawa materi dan esensi yang bisa dibilang cukup berat dan bisa gagal paham. I can say, film ini memiliki writing yang begitu brilian dan film yang disutradarai oleh Aronofsky ini secara keseluruhan seperti tidak memiliki plot karena semuanya bersifat metafora didampingi simbolis. Dengan marketing yang demikian, yang membangkitkan kesan horror dibandingkan dengan apa yang akan penonton saksikan memberikan reaksi yang luar biasa. CINEMASCORE memberi nilai F, dan banyak kritikus bahkan reviewer lainnya yang kebanyakan mungkin tidak siap dan tak mampu menerima sesuatu yang rasanya memang tak masuk akal.



Film ini bisa dibilang tidak jelas dalam pace bahkan ceritanya yang terasa melompat-lompat, ya memang aku akui rasanya seperti itu. Tetapi bagiku ada beberapa tujuan mengapa Aronofsky membuat hal seperti itu. It’s unusual in storytelling dan film ini crazy-super-double-insane ride. Kemudian perbedaan kontras pada perpindahan adegan, kadang cepat kadang lambat, belum lagi kepikiran dengan apa yang ingin Aronofsky ceritakan.

He’s not a god because of this, he’s still him. Seperti yang orang bilang dan deeply agree bahwa film ini memiliki sangkut paut dengan cerita biblical. Film ini lebih kepada menyoroti pandangan seorang mother (I don’t want to spoil) dari awal hingga sekarang ini. Dimana begitu jelas bahwa Aronofsky ingin penontonnya untuk tahu dan merenungi. Pada dasarnya seperti memanusiakan sesuatu agar bisa dimengerti oleh manusia yang terkadang kurang terketok hatinya. Pandangannya terhadap rumahnya (kalimat metafora) yang betul-betul menjadi nightmare gara-gara kita. Kemudian mengkritisi sifat manusia yang tidak ada puasnya dan berbagai macam interpretasi lainnya.

Tetapi dilain sisi, walau everything feels brilliant, cerita yang dibawakan terkadang kurang klik di first-act untuk first-time watch walau pada akhirnya hingga credits aku terdiam dan memikirkan soal ini sepanjang hari. Ini adalah sebuah bahasan general yang harus kita renungi.

Kemudian aku ingin memberi apresiasi pada Jennifer Lawrence, performancenya bagus walau rada trying dan agak lain ngeliat dirinya yang begitu soft. Dan pada interview dengan THR dia mengakui bahwa karakter yang dia bawa kali ini sungguh berat dan diluar dari capabilitynya. Selain itu, para cast terlihat begitu bagus terutama Michelle Pfeiffer.



Aku rasa Aronofsky sangat berani dan siap menerima apapun reaksinya. Ini adalah sajian yang membuatku takjub sekali atas isi yang ingin dia sampaikan. Merangkum cerita yang rasanya banyak sampai berabad-abad menjadi dua jam yang berhasil menampar pipi gua tanpa ada merah.

Akhir kata, tak semua orang bisa menikmati dan mempunyai satu pemikiran yang sama, dengan reaksi yang membludak dan ragam interpretasi walau terkoneksi dalam benang merah, membuat Aronofsky merasa berhasil membuat film ini bahkan Martin Scorsese memberi dukungan penuh padanya. Tetapi sangat disayangkan, ketika dia membeberkan maksud (yang masih belum aku baca) dari film ini. Seharusnya dibiarkan hal tersebut sampai pada masanya maksud dari film itu terkuak dan sukses. Banyak film yang berada dalam proses ini yang pada akhirnya berhasil di titik terakhir dan tetap tidak membeberkan esensinya. Tetapi keputusan sudah terjadi, selagi kita memahaminya, jadikan film ini bagai refleksi untuk kita sebagai manusia.


P.S. Kalau nonton film ini, nonton sampai credits habis dengan mendengarkan lagunya yang begitu sedih.

"brilliant on how humanize something on its point of view that remarkable to be reflection"

WTF! One word that is often made for this movie with various kinds of reactions and opinions from various people who have enjoyed it. It really separates the audience in their respective interpretations. Well, yes! I agree that this is so fuckin 'insane.

Honestly I'm confused to be explain you about the synopsis that really describes the actual content, but rather telling that, so this is about a couple who live in peace, destroyed by the arrival of strangers.

Many films this year come with unique experiences, this time mother! comes with ambitious move in material and essence which can be said quite heavy and possibly misunderstood. I can say, this movie has a brilliant writing and the film directed by Aronofsky as a whole as it doesn’t have a plot because everything is metaphorically accompanied by symbolism. With such marketing like that, which evokes a horror impression compared to what viewers will see to give a tremendous reaction. CINEMASCORE gives F grade, and many critics and even other reviewers who are most likely to be unprepared and incapable of receiving something that feels not logic.


This movie is arguably unclear in the pace and even the story that feels like hopping, yes, I admit it. But for me there are some reasons why Aronofsky makes such a thing. It's unusual in storytelling and it's like a crazy-super-double-insane ride. Then the differences of every event and action that feels contrast, sometimes fast-paced sometimes slow-paced.

He's not a god because of this, he's still him. As some of people say and deeply agree that this film has a strong connection with a biblical story. The film is more about highlighting the views of a mother (I do not want to spoil) from the beginning until now. It is so clear that Aronofsky wants his audience to know and contemplate. It's basically like humanizing something to be understood by people who are sometimes poorly tainted. Her (mother) point of view of her house (metaphorical sentence) is really a nightmare because of us. Then also criticize the unsatisfied human nature and other interpretations.

But on the other hand, though everything feels brilliant, the story is sometimes lacking in first-act for first-time watch although eventually until credits I'm speechless and think about it all day long. This is a general discussion that we should look forward to. Also, because this film has a story like an open interpretation, and seeing like that, it possibly getting misunderstood.

Then I want to give Jennifer Lawrence an appreciation, her performances are good though it's rather trying but not in her natural sense and it’s weird to see her so soft in this film. And in the interview with THR she acknowledged that the character she brought this time was really heavy and beyond her capability, plus pray for her diapraghm. In addition, the casts look so great especially Michelle Pfeifer.



I think Aronofsky is very bold and must ready to accept any reaction. This is the dish that makes me wonder at what he wants to say. Shorten the story that feels like centuries because it is so many that managed to slap me without any red.

Finally, not everybody can enjoy and have the same thought, with the overwhelming reaction and the variety of interpretations but one is always the same, making Aronofsky feel successful in making this film even Martin Scorsese giving full support to him. But very unfortunate, when he explains the meaning, the methaporical in it (which I still haven’t read) from this movie. It should be left to the point where the intentions of the movie were reaching a successful. Many great films were in this process that ultimately succeeds at the last point and still does not reveal the essence of it. But the decision has taken place, as long as we understand it, make this movie as a reflection for us as a human being.

JIGSAW (2017) REVIEW

Film yang aku anticipated banget ditambah adanya sebuah harapan pada sang sutradara yang juga pernah bikin film Predestination and I think, you know how good that is, tetapi mau bagaimana lagi, sebuah film lanjutan pada franchise tampil begitu mengecewakan walau jujur, tetap menghibur (?).

Seperti biasanya, tentang orang-orang yang diculik dan melakukan serangkaian tes mematikan dan harus mengakui kesalahan mereka. Seiring detektif memecahkan sebuah kasus itu, muncul sebuah kabar bahwa sang Jigsaw kembali hidup.


Kembali hidup? Mending nonton kalau mau jawabannya. Secara, SAW (2004) tetap bertengger diatas sana sebagai cult movie yang bagus jika series selanjutnya di sisihkan karena jujur, cuma pelengkap tanpa sesuatu spesial. Lalu, yang ini? I can't say it's the same. Yang jelas film ini masih memberikan sebuah sajian gore dan melihat orang sekarat dengan jebakan-jebakan baru, hanya saja film ini lebih diperkuat dengan investigasi dari detektif sampai pada akhirnya plot twist. Semua terasa pleasurable, enjoyable, dan pretty entertaining dalam lingkup horror.

Tetapi film ini tidak berjalan sesuai yang di inginkan, kembalinya Jigsaw hanya membawa unsur traps dan cerita baru dan formulanya itu-itu saja, bahkan approach dan pengeksekusian horror begitu lazy, nothing special in it. Tidak ada sesuatu yang membuat film ini sangat berkesan, hanya kesan puas begitu-begitu saja. Film ini rasanya seperti bukan kelanjutan tetapi bagai film tunggal maupun film prekuel. Belum lagi pengeksekusian sebuah rasa horror tidak begitu baik dan bergerak hanya pada satu poin yaitu visual gorenya, tak ada rasa mencekam maupun horror yang pernah kita rasakan dalam SAW franchise sebelumnya. Yang bekerja dengan baik hanya pada plot, kesatuan yang cukup solid dan itu saja.


Sebuah konklusi datang bahwa film ini bener-bener sebagai pelengkap sia-sia dan sebenarnya ga perlu banget di buat, jujur tidak ada sesuatu spesial atau materi experience yang lebih menarik maupun lebih mencekam, hanya sebagai pemuas atau penghibur keinginan para fans yang ingin SAW 8. Filmnya ga buruk-buruk amat, cuma lumayan dan masih worth bagi kalian yang penasaran. It's just traps, investigation, then plot twist, enjoyable, lumayan and that's all. Sejujurnya aku suka kok dengan filmnya, hanya sebatas pemuas horror gitu-gitu aja. Decent.

The one that I really anticipated then there's was a hope because of the director that brought to you on Predestination and I think you know how great that was, but then when I watched Jigsaw, it feels disappointing but honestly it still entertaining (?).

Like usual, some people kidnapped and brought to another place and do a series of death traps, dying and survive. Beside the detective solve the mysteries before it's too late, news coming to their ears that Jigsaw is alive.


Alive? I think you should see it to know the answer. For me SAW (2004) is a great Thriller and also a cult film but forget other films in its franchise because it's become nothing but pleasurably look on death traps and converting into thrill and using the same formula. So, now? I can't say it's the same. For clearly I think it's just give you a gore visual and see people dying with new death traps, then the detective investigation that felt solid until it end by the plot twist. That's all, just pleasurable, enjoyable, and pretty entertaining in horror thriller genre but not taking a serious forward to become interesting or fascinating.

This film is not filled my expectation, not so hype for it even I really excited for it, Jigsaw come with new traps, new storyline, but the formula is the same, even the approach and horror thriller execution is lazy, nothing special in it. Nothing very important or have a great reason to make this for than just fulfill the fans needs. It's not a continuity but feels like a single film or prequel. Not to mention how they execute its horror is not effective and just using the gore as a scary and thrill matter. It's not so gripping like I ever felt before in the franchise. What only good to me is just, the plot, solidity, that's it.


I'm very sure that this film was unnecessary to come and nothing special in it. Nothing forward or a great move in it. Like I said, it's just enjoyable, entertaining, and not impressive in everything to become a great work, just decent or probably worst in decision to make from the studio. Just traps, investigation, blend it then put the plot twist, that's all. I liked it but disappointing, it's worth to SAW or gory fans. It's not bad and don't mind the rating because the film is bad, it's just the way you felt and it's subjective.

GERALD'S GAME 2017 REVIEW

"Pretty intense with its reality of horror 
in lovely touch of color"

Film yang diadaptasi dari novel Stephen King memberikan sesuatu yang fresh dan belum lagi sang sutradara telah memberikan sesuatu dengan standard yang berbeda dari film-film yang pernah dibuatnya. Bener-bener kerasa style Stephen King itu sendiri, dari beberapa film adaptasi novel Stephen King, ini termasuk yang terbaik, gua akui.

Premisnya ini bener-bener buat gua tertarik dan agak nyesel karena udah nonton trailernya. Film ini menceritakan tentang suami istri yang mencoba membangun hubungan kembali, pergi ke villa yang jauh dari permukiman. Sang istri mencoba mengikuti kemauan gairah sang suami yang begitu aneh yang malah menjebak dirinya yang terantai ke tiang tempat tidur sementara suaminya pingsan akibat serangan jantung mendadak.

By that, gua udah langsung mikir, bagaimana dia bisa survive? Escape dari rantai itu, coba? Inilah yang menjadi sesuatu yang menyihir gua. But more likely, film ini menciptakan sebuah kisah yang bener-bener diluar dugaan gua dan adegan demi adegan memancing reaksi gua.

Ceritanya menurut gua tidak begitu solid, somewhat enough. Pada first-act nya gua merasa film ini begitu soul less walau menit setelahnya, kisah menjadi menarik. Belum lagi performance sang aktor aktrisnya yang begitu bagus dengan dialog yang easy-going dan bener-bener digali betul sehingga ktia bakal fokus dengan sang karakter utama dengan baik.

Mike Flanagan kali ini meramu kisah dalam arahan yang begitu baik apalagi warna-warna indah namun tersirat akan makna yang menurut gua betul-betul paham memberikan rasa kepada penonton terhadap dunia yang dirasakan oleh sang karakter utama.

Horror yang ditampilkan tak hanya dari keseraman kisah, keseraman dengan apa yang terjadi padanya atau apa yang akan terjadi selanjutnya, tetapi didalam cerita karya Stephen King ini, memberikan suatu realita yang lebih serem dan menghantui jiwa atau mental seseorang. Gua menyimpulkan bahwa ni film lebih ke arah survival daripada visual eerie maupun jumpscare, tetapi bener-bener menarik reaksi dan tantangan kepada penonton.

It's different type but entertaining and of course, film ini recommended. Coba tonton deh lalu komen soal pendapat lu!
